On 17 August, 10:00-11:00 (Central European Summer Time – CEST), the Executive Vice-President for a Europe fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe Vestager, will host a citizens’ dialogue on the new Digital Education Action Plan.
The debate will take place in Ørestad Gymnasium, a secondary school in Copenhagen, and will be held in Danish.
The goal of the event is to gather the views of students, teachers, headmasters, education technology entrepreneurs and professionals on the COVID-19 crisis. The discussion will help to gain insights into citizens’ expectations until the end of the crisis, during the recovery period and their visions for the future of European digital education.
Executive Vice-President Vestager will give a short opening statement outlining the key priorities of the new Digital Education Action Plan. The participants will then have the opportunity to engage in a discussion with the Executive Vice-President.
Participants are invited to share their views and experiences on the implications of the COVID-19 crisis for the education and training community and their broader vision for European digital education.
A new Digital Education Action Plan
In September 2020, the Commission will adopt a new Digital Education Action Plan promoting high-quality, accessible and inclusive education and training in the digital age.
During the past months, due to the COVID-19 pandemic there was an unprecedented switch to distance and online learning to ensure the continuity of education and training. The crisis demonstrated that reinforced efforts are needed at the European Union (EU) level to promote the availability of digital infrastructure and the possession of digital skills among learners, educators and parents.
The new Action Plan will apply the lessons learnt from the COVID-19 crisis and set out a long-term vision for the digital transformation of education and training in the EU. The Digital Education Action Plan contributes to the European Commission’s broader ambition to create a European Education Area by 2025.
Open Public Consultation
This event is part of the outreach series complementing the EU-wide open public consultation on the new Digital Education Action Plan engaging stakeholders from different backgrounds, including education and training organisations, civil society and industry.
The consultation will inform the new Digital Education Action Plan and gather the views and experiences of citizens, institutions, organisations and companies during the coronavirus crisis. The consultation runs until 4 September 2020 and is available in all official EU languages.
