India: New Education Framework: 5 Trends in Education to watch out for in 2023

National Education Policy 2020 is a major step towards reimagining the education system and boosting every aspect from pedagogy and curriculum to accessibility. Here are some of the 5 trends for this year.

After the Covid-19 pandemic induced the shift to online schooling, the Indian education sector has experienced an extensive shake-up in the last nearly 3 years. Learning is no longer bound by time or location, as this is the age of technology-enhanced, personalised, and interdisciplinary learning. With the National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP 2020) being the guiding light, the education system is still transitioning, with more changes being incorporated into the system for a better-educated, future-forward country.

Here are the 5 trends in education to watch out for in 2023 by Anne Dias, Director – Academics, Quality Analysis and Trainings, VIBGYOR Group of Schools.

1. INTEGRATED CURRICULUM

An integrated curriculum refers to a teaching approach that combines multiple subjects or areas of study into an integrated whole. This approach creates a more cohesive learning experience for students by linking together different subject areas and demonstrating the interconnections between them.

For example, maths and history lessons can be interlinked by conducting activities that might involve calculating the costs of war. Last year, the government launched India’s first-ever integrated curriculum framework for primary school children.

2. REFORMS IN TEACHING METHODOLOGIES

Traditional rote learning will be on its way out, and more emphasis will be given to practical-, activity- and project-based learning systems. Apart from learning the subject, schooling will also focus on developing creativity, critical thinking, and important life skills among students.
Extensive use of technology in teaching and the NEP 2020 recommended instruction in regional languages will lead to better educational management.

3. EVALUATION

Emphasis on activity-based learning in schools will also lead to an increased evaluation of students’ practical knowledge of subjects. Non-theoretical or experimental assessments will gain prominence over the earlier standardised, theory-based tests. Schools will also pivot towards a criterion-based grading system that will assess the achievements of the students according to the learning goals of each program.

4. CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHERS

In line with the policy, 2023 will see greater investment in the professional development of teachers at local and national levels, including their working environments and service conditions. Professional development helps teachers stay up-to-date with the latest teaching methods and strategies, as well as the subject matter knowledge.

5. EMPAHSIS ON SKILL DEVELOPMENT

NEP 2020 also outlined the importance of skill development as a part of education, to promote multidisciplinary learning, and to provide students with a strong foundation in technical skills, to stay competitive in the job market. Students with employable skills are likely to find work easily and contribute impactfully to the economy, thus playing an important part in building a stronger nation.
