From metaverse education to nano learning, these are the top 5 higher education trends for 2023.

Online certification courses, ed-tech expansion, upskilling workplace competencies, and the rise of metaverse education models alongside gamification would be the top trends in the upcoming year. But ‘Nano-learning’ is set to be the scene stealer next year, as millennials and young professionals seek to upgrade their competencies and learning in a more efficient, effective, and less time-consuming manner.

While metaverse is expected to bring in sweeping changes, certain courses like human resources, finance, marketing, machine learning, data science, cyber security, and UX UI courses are expected to be in high demand. Online certification courses will also continue to occupy a special niche for learners because the future is about constant upskilling.

Borderless campuses and the vast internet expanse will open more doors and expose learners to newer ways of learning and upskilling themselves. Besides technical proficiencies, the workplace will witness an equal measure of emotional, mental, and social learning.

Therefore, new age curriculums and pedagogies will be aligned sharply to this need in the year 2023, while there will be a huge focus on research, innovation, collaboration, and high-quality interdisciplinary learning across segments from science, liberal arts, social science to humanities and reducing the accessibility gap to some extent, in the country. This will also push the need for quality education over quantity, giving the learners a plethora of choices.

METAVERSE EDUCATION

Augmented reality coupled with virtual reality is driving more impactful and immersive experiences today in education. In fact, according to a recent report by Market Research Future (MRFR), AR and VR in the Education Market are anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 18.2% from the year 2022 to 2027.

Metaverse will drive educational institutions and workplaces to create and equip themselves with future tools that will make communication, learning, and working more integrated and seamless.

GAMIFICATION

One of the most popular trends in the education industry today, gamification is making its presence felt by driving more engagement and learning in an unconventional manner. Gamified experiences improve skill acquisition, motivation, engagement, and learner achievement tracking.

WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES SKILLING

Agility, adaptability, recruitment practices, talent acquisition, and management and leadership are set to be in sharp focus in the upcoming year. Therefore, curriculums will be more aligned to real-world learning via projects and collaborations and give importance to soft skills like communication, emotional intelligence, empathy, persuasion, and collaboration are in high demand.

NANO LEARNING

A quick module packs in learning and information in small information nuggets, summing up the nano-learning concept. It is gaining worldwide popularity because of its high engagement with learners, the relevance of course materials, and that it is inclusive.

With the world opening up post-pandemic and work-from-home also being the new normal, learners of all age groups will continue to make time for online learning via certification courses that are expected to boost their careers and increase their skills.

Rather than mere diplomas, the world is witnessing the rise of skill-based courses that provide an extra edge in the career space and also equip learners to deal with any challenges in the face of a VUCA world.

All of these trends and learnings point towards a new chapter in education: Self-learning and virtual education will gradually see a paradigm shift in the preference of education modes and methodologies, paving the way for more opportunities, diverse learning, and knowledge for dynamic careers of the future and beyond.
